What is DWDM?

DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) is a technology capable of combining multiple channels into a single fiber or a pair of fibers, optimizing the utilization of cables and fiber optic pathways.

How does DWDM work?

DWDM devices (multiplexer or Mux for short) combine the output of multiple optical transmitters for transmission over a single optical fiber.

At the receiving end, another DWDM device (demultiplexer or Demux for short) separates the combined optical signals and routes each channel to an optical receiver. Only one optical fiber is used between DWDM devices (per transmission direction). Instead of necessitating one optical fiber per transmitter-receiver pair, DWDM enables multiple optical channels to share a single fiber-optic cable.

DWDM systems utilize wavelengths within the range of 1500nm to 1600nm and offer a high transmission capacity per channel. For instance, in the TJ1600 series, they can transmit from 1Gbps to 600Gbps per channel.

Currently, owing to its more affordable cost, DWDM is accessible even for small ISPs that often face capacity bottlenecks due to the ever-increasing demand for bandwidth and new services.

ISPs can cater to the needs of small and medium-sized network links using compact DWDM solutions like the PK200 series, without the need for transponders. They can start with a few channels and progressively expand their capacity.
